His first appointment was to the Raub Methodist Church, a position he held during the first two years at Garrett, followed by a two year stay in Waterloo, Indiana.

He was then transferred to Elwood where the family stayed until 1984 when another move was made to Winamac. During those years in Elwood, Bill also served a term on the school board and the city council. In the seventeen years the Mathys family lived in Winamac the church witnessed some growth in missions activity and spiritual development.

Age finally caught up with Bill and retirement became necessary in 2001 when Bill and Joyce bought a home and moved to Anderson. Bill continues to enjoy being involved in ministry as a member of the staff at First UMC.
